If you grew up in Delta State, then you probably know about Emu Bakeries, one of the top bakeries of the time. The mere mention of their bread still brings back fond memories for many of us. But today, I’m not here to reminisce about the past—I’m here to talk about the future of bread, specifically the masterpiece crafted by one of my very own Urhobo sisters.
She recently ventured into the bread-making business, and I doubt she anticipated just how quickly it would blossom. What started as a simple endeavour has now flourished into something bigger than she ever expected. On Saturday, she invited me to a showcase event, and I agreed to go. Honestly, the way she asked was so sweet and unexpected that it felt a little like a date,I even laughed to myself when I woke up at 12:45 a.m. just to read her request.
After the event, on our way back, we started talking about her bread. Naturally, I mentioned how I wanted to place an order, especially for the kids. That’s when she revealed that she had already packed a loaf for us as a gift. And not just any loaf, a coconut loaf! I was so grateful.
But of course, I couldn’t resist asking her to add two more plain loaves for the next day, as I had sandwiches in mind for school lunches.
Fast forward to getting home my not so little “food caterpillar” (a.k.a. my son) was eagerly waiting to see what goodies I had in hand. After his usual hugs and kisses, he sped off with the bread. I quickly yelled, “Don’t finish it o!” in my best Nigerian mother voice.
He agreed, but then I heard him scream from the kitchen,
“Mommy, where did you get this bread?! This is the best bread I’ve had in my entire life. In my 13 years of existence, nothing comes close!”
Of course, I had to taste it myself. One bite and I was just as amazed. The bread was perfection soft, buttery, fresh, and filled with the essence of love.
It practically melted in my mouth. Immediately, I messaged my sister, letting her know I needed those two loaves I’d ordered for the next day.
I knew then that this was the beginning of a whole new bread journey for our family.
As for Fitfam? Well, that’s officially on hold because this bread is too good to pass up! Please leave big stomach for us.
To describe this bread feels almost like an injustice.
It’s luscious, rich, and so soft you could mistake it for clouds. And the taste? It’s more than just bread, it’s an experience. The love that went into baking it is evident in every bite, and it fills you up in the most satisfying way.
My sister was kind enough to drop off the two extra loaves the next day, and you can guess what the kids had for breakfast on Monday morning—yes, bread and egg! If you’ve read my previous blog post, you know exactly how that egg was fried with love and candlelight. lol
Here is her instagram handle, incase you might want to try. Tell her you are from me, after you've had your taste, come back to this page and lets reminisce on every bite.
